In this video, I take a detailed look at the MAXMAKE HiMill D1S, a compact enclosed desktop CNC with a 200 × 280 mm working area, ballscrew-driven axes and a 250 W brushless spindle. I also look at some of the optional accessories, including the 3D probe, rotary axis, laser and vacuum workholding system.
I start with a couple of MAXMAKE’s example projects before moving on to my own tests. These include relief carving and rotary machining, along with setting up rotary toolpaths in both Fusion 360 and the browser-based Kiri:Moto CAM software.
I also install and test the optional 10 W diode laser using both MAXMAKE Studio and LightBurn, including engraving and cutting 3 mm basswood.
Finally, I try some more demanding CNC work, including carving a brass stamp and machining 3 mm aluminium, before testing the optional vacuum workholding kit.
Overall, I found the HiMill D1S to be a capable and accurate machine with a good range of accessories, although the supplied software could still use further development, particularly on the CNC CAM side.
